Description of Changes

What follows is a fairly detailed description of the changes that will be made in Version 1, Version 2, and Version 3 of the Enhanced Re-edit of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. This includes information on some of what will be edited from the film, and what shots will be altered or replaced with CGI (computer generated imaging).

There will also be some notes as to why these changes are being made.

Remember:
Version 1 will have no changes aside from new special effects.
Version 2 will have new special effects, and some reediting.
Version 3 will have new special effects, and more reediting.

VERSION 1:

This version will be called
"Star Trek V: The Final Frontier - The Enhanced Edition"

Version 1 will have no major alterations aside from new special effects.

No special effects will be added that alters anything seen in the theatrical version plot-wise.

The running time will be about the same as the theatrical cut.
The only trimming will be the poor bluescreen shots during Kirk's fall from the mountain, etc.

VERSION 2:

This Version will be called:
"Star Trek V: The Final Frontier - The Enhanced Re-Edit V.2 "

This Version will have new effects, and will have some reediting.

NOTE: This is still a work-in-progress.
There may be other alterations not listed here,
and some alterations listed here may not be in the final cut of Version 2.

SCENE: Opening scene with Sybok and J'onn.

This scene will have no changes.

SCENE: Opening Credits

After the camera pans up from Sybok to the sun and fades to white, there will be new opening credits.

The camera will pull away from the sun, then pan around to open space.  The title will appear similar to how it does in the theatrical version (including the sparkle), over a new moving starfield.  After the credits, a few figures will be seen flying by (planets, nebulas, etc) before a tilt-down to earth. The camera will zoom down through the clouds of earth, dissolving to the establishing shot of El Capitan. This is based on what was originally intended for the opening credits. This will all be done during the opening music and will not alter the running time of the opening credits.

There will be no changes to the scenes of Kirk's climbing during the opening credits.

SCENE: Kirk's discussion with Spock on the mountain, and his subsequent fall.

All of the bluescreen shots of Spock and Kirk will be removed.

Kirk's scream as he falls will be removed.

Some lines will be trimmed at the end of the scene.

The scene will end when Kirk says "Go to sleep, Spock."

SCENE: Klaa blows up a probe.

All special effects in this scene will be redone with CGI.

Klaa will be firing on a different kind of probe than the one we see in the theatrical version.

When the probe explodes, there will be a shot of the Bird of Prey flying through the explosion.

Also, the sound effects will be altered so there will be no "scream" when the probe is fired upon.

SCENE: Uhura picks up Kirk and Spock.

New CGI shots of the shuttlecraft will be added.

New CGI shots will replace some of the special effects in this scene.

This shot was originally intended to be in the film.

This scene will be removed.

SCENE: Paradise City battle.

A few lines will be trimmed (such as "Hold your horse, Captain").

A new CGI shot of the shuttlecraft approaching overhead will be added.

A new CGI shot of the shuttlecraft preparing to land will be added.

The shot of Spock neck-pinching a horse will be removed.

The cat dancer fight will be removed.

SCENE: Kirk and Spock are captured.

Some minor line editing may be made.

SCENE: Emergency Landing Plan "B."

Most of the effects shots will be replaced with CGI.

In this new CGI, the shuttlebay doors will open slower.

The shuttle will skid through the bay much faster.

The Bird of Prey firing the torpedo will be replaced with a new CGI shot.

When the Enterprise goes to warp and the torpedo misses, this will be a new CGI shot.

Some minor audio changes will be made.

There will be new CGI sparks briefly raining down from the panel.

SCENE: Sybok's speech.

The Enterprise warp shot will replaced with a new shot.

As Sybok is giving his speech, a subtle heartbeat sound may be added during the early parts of his speech.
This is to make it more clear that he's influencing the rest of the ship's crew with his mental powers.

SCENE: The jailbreak.

Some line editing and alteration may be done here.

SCENE: Kirk and Scotty in the Engineering corridor.

Scotty banging his head will be removed.

SCENE: The turboshaft.

The shuttlecraft landing shot in the theatrical version will remain, but there's a brief half-second glitch in the film at the beginning of this shot. This glitch will be trimmed.

SCENE: Kirk and company explore the pinnacle.

The medium shot of the pinnacle will be digitally altered, because a road can be seen in this shot.

SCENE: The columns.

Digital alterations will be made to some of the model shots of the columns rising from the ground in this scene.

A few subtle dark clouds may be added to the sky throughout the scenes as Kirk and company are within the columns.  This will help make these shots feel less like a soundstage.

SCENE: "God" appears.

The animated side-view wide shot of the streak of light shooting upward from the columns will be replaced with a new CGI shot.

All silhouette shots will be digitally altered to look less like bluescreen.

The "many faces of god" will be slightly enhanced.

The actual godhead, played by George Murdock, will not be replaced in the column shots, but there will be enhancement of the field around him.

Some continuity errors with the godhead's size will be reworked.

SCENE: What does God need with a starship?

The lightning bolts coming out from the godhead's eyes will be digitally replaced with more realistic effects.

SCENE: Enterprise fires a torpedo.

The torpedo shot will be replaced with new CGI.
The torpedo will more closely resemble torpedoes seen in the other TOS films.

After the torpedo fires, the camera may briefly "chase" the torpedo toward the planet.  This shot was originally intended to be in the film.

The torpedo explosion will be enhanced with CGI.

The leaping shot of Kirk, Spock, and McCoy from the torpedo explosion will be digitally improved.

Raining cinders will be digitally added as Kirk, Spock and McCoy rise up from the ground.

The effect shots in this scene will be replaced with new CGI shots.  The Bird of Prey will de-cloak and quickly fire upon the Enterprise.  We will actually see the torpedo impact with the Enterprise.  Some of the music Jerry Goldsmith intended for this scene will be reinstated to fill the extra time. All subsequent scenes of the Enterprise will show the Enterprise with some battle damage.

SCENE: Kirk alone in the shuttlecraft.

The shot of light bursting from the shuttle's windshield will be replaced with a new CGI shot of the Creature's hand smashing through the windshield, shattering it as sparks from the computer panels shoot around.  This was how the shot was originally intended.

The shot of Kirk running out of the shuttlecraft will be digitally enhanced with fiery Rockman effects to replace the blue lightning bolts erupting out from the shuttlecraft.

SCENE: Spock talks to Klaa.

The Bird of Prey/Enterprise shot will be replaced with CGI.

SCENE: Kirk is rescued.

Some of Jerry Goldsmith's music that was intended for this scene will be reinstated.

The blue lightning effects will be enhanced with CGI fiery effects.

The godhead shots in this scene will be replaced with new CGI Rockman shots.

The continuity error of Kirk's arm positions on the mountaintop will be corrected by reshuffling some shots, to give Kirk time to lower and raise his arms again.

SCENE: Kirk aboard the Bird of Prey.

Some line edits will be made.

SCENE: Observation lounge.

The Bird of Prey/Enterprise shot will be replaced with CGI.

The shot of Sulu and Chekov admiring Vixis's muscles will be removed.

SCENE: Return to shore leave/Ending credits

The closing credit music will be replaced with the closing credit music used on the soundtrack, thus eliminating the "bird squawk" sound effect during the Klingon theme in the theatrical version of the closing credits.

VERSION 3

This Version will be called:
"Star Trek V: The Final Frontier - The Enhanced Re-Edit V.3"

Version 3 will have more editing to give the film a more "serious" tone.
